Airplanes are unfamiliar, overstimulating, dirty, and unwelcoming for children. By taking the time and effort to “personalize” the family space and experience on a plane, a child has a much better chance of finding some relaxation and sleep.Basic needs such as eating, sleeping, and pooping must be addressed and the uncomfortable environment of an airplane cabin can make it feel impossible for the needs of young travelers to be met. There are Tips to Personalize Your Space with Comfort!
.Don't tell children about the dangers of flying. It is almost always preferred to level with children and tell them the truth. In this case, throw that wisdom out the window. If a child brings it up, tell her that flying is perfectly safe and promise her that the plane will not crash. If she persists, tell her the plane is crash-proof. If the child has an inkling of doubt, his imagination may conjure the worst and this could lead to anxiety.
.Bring enough snacks and drinks. Many airlines have cut back on food service unless the flight is international. Also, children are picky eaters and may not like the food being offered. Three to five hours can be a long time on an airplane without food. Children, like adults, get crabby when they are hungry. When they are in a foul mood, it is easier to let fear of the unknown take control.
.Bring a favorite book and a new book your kids have never read. Reading may also make your children fall asleep or bring a comfort object that your child enjoys. Most kids have a stuffed animal or a blanket that they love. Be sure to bring this along as it will provide a mental safety net for the child and help with any fears. Having this object along might also help him fall asleep.
.Keep them distracted, especially when the plane is boarding, taking off, and landing, which seem to be the hardest part of the flight for most young kids. For older kids, chewing gum can be helpful to prevent their ears from popping when the plane is landing and taking off, but keep in mind that this is a choking hazard for younger kids, who can get a similar effect by drinking something at this time during the flight. If your child has recently developed a bulging or acute infection, the pressure in his ears during takeoff and landing will make him very uncomfortable. Occasionally, a severe ear infection can cause the eardrum to burst. Antibiotics can usually bring ear infections under control within a day or two, and that extra time will make a huge difference in your child's comfort. If infection strikes within hours of your scheduled trip, I advise paying the fee to postpone your flight. Sparing your child unnecessary ear pain is well worth the delay.before the flight, you can give him saline nose drops to decrease congestion. If your child is uncomfortable during the flight, give him a child's pain reliever. Or you can have him suck on a bottle to help inflate the eustachian tube and lessen the pressure his ears. Child-sized earplugs can also help relieve discomfort by regulating changes in air pressure in your child's external ear.
